People take such liberties these days, don’t they? Yeah, I know I sound like I’m going into a “back in my day” rant, but it really does seem to me that the meaning of “free speech” has somehow gotten skewed. Free speech means that one is free to say whatever they want, yeah. We have the legal right to speak, as long as it’s not to falsely malign or spread hate. But it’s a legal right, not a moral one.
Used to be that people were polite. Then again, it used to be that people spoke face to face, or at least over the phone. These kids with their technology, they hide behind their screens in their dark little basement rooms and say whatever they want and damn the consequences. It ain’t right, I tell ya! It just ain’t right.
Such liberties.
This old-folk rant, courtesy of my birthday, is brought to you by Just Jot it January, and in particular, prompted by the word “liberty,” provided by Capt Jill! Thank you so much, Jill! She hadn’t posted for the prompt yet at the publishing of this post, but you can find her blog by clicking right here. Please go and say hi! To participate in the prompt, please visit this post, where you’ll find the rules and you can leave your link in the comments.

The downside of living in a world of free speech is that one discovers that there is no limit to the vile things that people feel free to say.

What are thing comin’ to when a person hasn’t the liberty to rant on their birthday? Happy birthday! And yes, I wish people still had a few manners left.

In the old days, crazy people would sit in the back of the bus mumbling to themselves. Today they have the Internet…

You are dead right, Linda! Not only the trolls but I find some elderly people (my mum for sure), feels that they have got to an age where they can say whatever thy ‘bloody well like.’ This is the clip I used in post for ‘Liberty’ and it is spot on!

Happy birthday, and rant away, Linda, rant away. I wish that people had to be identified before posting comments anywhere. Not just a registered screen name, but “this is this guy” identification.

Happy Birthday Linda and thanks for letting me do one of the prompts. I would have to say the issue is with civil society. You can’t legislate morality, that comes from how you’re raised.

Nope, you can’t legislate morality. Never a truer word.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, and thanks so much again for the prompt! 😀

Civility is definitely lacking online. I follow USA Today on Facebook, but I had to stop reading the comments to the articles. Some are so horribly mean. I’ll stick to blogs with nice interaction. Like yours. 😊
