#SoCS – Your Servant

Ah, the things we do for our kids. I drove to Ottawa today for our (my son, Chris, and I) other annual museum pilgrimage. This one is a tour of four different museums – today was the History museum (in Gatineau, where above-mentioned son was born) and the War museum. It’s doubtful I’d ever have visited either of them on my own, but now, after having been to each at least half a dozen times, they feel like home. I seem to discover something new each year – the War museum never fails to humble.

Now I’m sitting in my own room, having procured a suite at the St. Paul University residence with two separate bedrooms and a kitchen for under $100. Not bad, eh? Apparently I snore, so my poor son doesn’t like to sleep in the same room as me. (Yes, this is how you know this is stream of consciousness. Normally I wouldn’t admit to such a thing, but no editing…)

Tomorrow we’ll visit the Agriculture and Food Museum (oooh, that might be nice) in lieu of the Science museum we usually go to but can’t because it’s closed. Then it will be on to the Nature museum. Another one I’ve been to, actually more times than the others, because I went there once on a field trip as well. Chris has probably been to them all a dozen times. But he’s Autistic, so he enjoys the repetition.

We got lost when we were looking for the hotel/residence. The street address doesn’t show up from the street – it’s tucked in behind the university and there is loads of construction as well. Chris began to freak out, so I went to one of the local businesses and asked where the place was. He keeps telling me he wants to come to Japan with me. I found today to be a perfect time to explain to him that I get lost often. In Canada, where I speak the language (and can even get by in French), it’s easy to ask for directions. In Japan… I walk around a lot, looking for things myself, even when I’m lost. I can’t imagine what it would be like, as anxious as I sometimes get when I can’t find where I’m supposed to go, having an Autistic 21 year old going through a conniption with me.

So yeah, that probably won’t happen. But the things we do for our kids.

This has been a perfect example of not using the prompt other than in the title of a post for Stream of Consciousness Saturday. But that’s fair! Because the title prompted what came next. Feel free to follow this and all the other (lax) rules you’ll find here, for SoCS: https://lindaghill.com/2016/08/26/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-august-2716/

#ThursdayDoors – Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto

On Tuesday, my son, Christopher, and I went to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

It’s a yearly excursion for us. This year’s special exhibition featured the art of Dale Chihuly.

The pictures really don’t do the art justice. If you ever have a chance to see Chihuly’s work firsthand, go.

Thursday Doors is a prompt by the fabulous Norman Frampton. Click the following link to go to his post for this week and see how you, too, can join in! https://miscellaneousmusingsofamiddleagedmind.wordpress.com/2016/08/04/thursday-doors-august-4-2016/

#ThursdayDoors – A Train and a Station

I absolutely adore train stations. I’m not sure why – perhaps I traveled by train often in another life. Anyhow, one of my favourite places to visit (as you may already know) is Kingston, Ontario, and downtown there is an out-of-commission station, now used as a tourist shop and information booth.

The doors, in my opinion, are spectacular. Please click on the images for a closer look.

And finally, behind the train station there’s an old engine sitting on an unused length of track. I tried to take a picture of its door, but it’s kind of squashed in where you can’t see it well.

Thursday Doors is brought to you by the great Norm Frampton here. Click the link to read the rules and add your own post.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge – Silhouette

In response to K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge prompt this week, which was shadows and silhouettes, I decided to use a picture I took in May. I was standing under a cherry tree and for some reason or another, took a picture of the sun through the branches.

Here is the original:

I thought first to see what my new phone could do with it. I was quite happy with this version, which I did nothing particular with except change the filters available. I like the way the branches stand out, giving it a skeletal look:

Then I decided to play around with that. This version, I think, has a bit of a Dystopian feel to it:

And finally, here’s what I ended up with when I played around with the original. I was trying to bring out the prism of the sun’s rays. It certainly shows off the actual brilliance of the pink blossoms:

One-Liner Wednesday – What do you get when you cross a joke with an idiom?

I may still not know, for sure, why the chicken did it, but I suspect the geese crossed the road because the grass is always greener on the other side.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge – Metal

As I was wandering around Kingston on the weekend, looking for metal, (because that’s the theme of this week’s Cosmic Photo Challenge) I came across a gate with some nasty looking needles. It’s like they put them in there just to make a point… so to speak.

The first is close to the original. I washed out a bit of the colour to age it a little:

But then I thought what the hell. I just got a new phone today and the camera came with a few editing goodies, so why not make it look like I took the photo when the place was built?

What do you think?

#SoCS – Drink before bed

What am I doing here when i’m too tired to be here? I just came to say I ate so much tonight, I feel like a snake who swallowed an elephant whole. i may not move for the next three days. Also, while i was out, my son was using my laptop and now my left shift key doesn’t work. Which is why some of my “i”s aren’t capitalized.

i usually take a glass of wine up to bed with me, but tonight it will be water. I hope i’m feeling better enough by the morning that I’ll be able to drink coffee.

Here are some ducks and turtles hanging out:
