Missy: Why doesn’t Uncle Ken want us to go?

Madigan: Because he loves us.

Missy: So why are we going?

Madigan: Because sometimes it’s just easier that way.

They sit quietly for a few minutes.

59. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Sunday, October 29th, 2:00pm
Madigan and Ken

Madigan: (looking down at a picture on her lap) I don’t believe it.

Ken: There’s your proof.

Madigan: Barb has been having an affair with your brother all this time?

Ken: She’s your sister.

Madigan: (snorts) She’s your wife. I feel like I’m living in a soap opera. Where are they now?

Ken: On a beach in Barbados, according to the private detective. (points at the photo) I recognize the resort. We went there for our honeymoon.

Madigan: (shakes head and looks up at him) So what are you going to do about it?

Ken: Ask her for a divorce. And marry you, if you’ll have me.

Madigan: What about the lipstick on your collar?

Ken: That was just Barb trying to make you jealous. She already knew about our affair.

Madigan: (sighs) I should have guessed. (looks at him sharply) Wait, was that a proposal?

Ken: I don’t have a ring or anything, but … yeah.

Madigan: (blinks away tears) I want to say yes. But what are family gatherings going to be like?

Ken: (huffs out a laugh) About as awkward as they have been since we started seeing each other behind Barb’s back. God knows how long she’s been screwing my brother.

Madigan: (takes his hand) I wonder if they’re as happy as we are when we’re together.

Ken: I hope not. So, what do you say? Will you consider marrying me?

Madigan: (frowns) My dad’s going to get sick of walking us down the aisle to meet you.

Ken waits silently, gazing into her eyes.

Madigan: Let me think about it.

Tuesday, October 17th, 2:00pm
Madigan and Missy

Missy: Mommy, what’s a “seatful prick”?

Madigan: That’s DEceitful, and you don’t say the word “prick.” It’s not nice. What were you doing awake at eleven last night anyway?

Missy: I woke up when Shadow barked. Who were you talking to?

Madigan: Never you mind.

Missy: Was it Uncle Ken?

Madigan: (regards her daughter) What makes you think it was Uncle Ken?

Missy: Oh just ‘coz Auntie Barb called him that.

Madigan: And when did you hear that?

Missy: The day you went to work and I stayed at Auntie Barb’s place.

Madigan: Two weeks ago?

Missy: (shrugs) I guess.

Madigan: Did you hear anything else?

Missy: (nods) Uh-huh.

Madigan: What else did you hear?

Missy: Auntie Barb told him that he was no better than her sister. Isn’t you her sister, Mommy?

Madigan: Yes. (gazes out the window)

Missy: Are you “seatful,” Mommy?

Madigan: Not as much as Auntie Barb is.

Madigan and Barb

Barb: I caught him.

Madigan: Caught who doing what?

Barb: Ken. He’s definitely fooling around on me.

Madigan: (stares at her) What … makes you say that?

Barb: Lipstick. On his collar.

Madigan: No way!

Barb: Yep. Blood red. Who wears a colour like that anyway?

Madigan: (frowns) Not me.

Barb: Pfft. Some floosy. She’d have to be, to fool around with a married man. A real slut. One with no self-respect. Oh God, do you think she’s got a disease?

Madigan: I hope not!

Barb: Oh Maddie, what am I going to do? You know I hate confrontations. They’re so … belittling. Would you to talk to him?

Madigan: Me?!

Barb: You’re my sister. I trust you. Will you give him shit for me? Please?

Madigan: I’d love to give him shit. But shouldn’t you be the one to talk to him? You’re his wife after all. Anyway, I might slug him one.

Barb: You’re probably right. (sighs) Sometimes I envy you. Having none of this crap to worry about. Nobody fools around on you – you don’t have anybody.

Madigan: (snorts, turns to the window and mumbles) Not anymore.

34. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Wednesday, October 4th, 3:00pm
Madigan and Ken

Madigan: Barb knows.

Ken: What do you mean?

Madigan: She knows there’s something going on. She doesn’t know it’s me though.

Ken stares down at his hands in his lap.

Madigan: What are you going to do about it?

Ken: Maybe we should cool it for a while.

Madigan: Probably a good idea.

Ken: But I don’t want to.

Madigan looks out the window

Ken: I’m thinking about leaving her.

Madigan: Don’t do it for me.

Ken: Why not? I want to be with you.

Madigan: (staring at him) It would destroy Barb and you know it.

Ken: Don’t you want to be with me?

Madigan: Not at the expense of my sister. This was never supposed to go beyond one time. I think we should just end it and cut our losses.

Ken: After today then?

Madigan: (looking out the window) This will be our last time.

24. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Sunday, September 24th, 10:00am
Madigan and Barb

Madigan: (looking out the window) So what makes you think Ken’s fooling around on you?

Barb: He’s just acting really weird lately.

Madigan: (regards Barb) Weird like what?

Barb: I don’t know. It’s just one of those things a wife notices. You wouldn’t understand.

Madigan: What does that mean?

Barb: Well, you know. You and Tom were never really happy.

Madigan: That doesn’t mean I wasn’t a wife to him.

Barb: Come on, Maddie. He never even loved you. How can you say you knew him at all and that you’d notice little things that a real wife does, when you couldn’t even comprehend that? And anyway, you weren’t even married.

Madigan: (turns to the window) Marriage is just a piece of paper.

Barb: You wouldn’t know though, would you? You’ve never been married. Ken loved me enough to put a ring on my finger and tell the whole world that he wanted to spend his life with me. Nobody’s ever done that for you.

Madigan: (looks sharply at Barb) And yet you think he’s fooling around on you!

Barb: (checks her fingernails) Eeh, it’s probably just my imagination.

Madigan: (stares out the window and mumbles) Don’t count on it.

14. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Note: Strong language, adult themes.

Thursday, September 14th, 3:00pm
Madigan and Ken

Madigan: Do you really think we should be seen in public like this?

Ken: Why not? I’m your brother-in-law. We met on the street outside your work and now we’re going…

Madigan: Right. Where do we say we’re going again?

Ken: For a coffee.

Madigan: On a bus? Everyone knows there’s a Tim Horton’s within walking distance of anywhere downtown.

Ken: Don’t worry about it. We’re not going to be seen by anyone who knows us anyway.

Madigan sighs and looks out the window.

Ken: Do you want to go back?

Madigan: No.

Ken: You said yourself it’s not safe to get together at your place anymore. So what choice do we have?

Madigan: (mumbles) We could stop seeing each other.

Ken: (puts his hand on her knee) Did you say you want to stop seeing each other?

Madigan: I just don’t want to get caught. Barb is my sister … my only sister. And what am I teaching Missy?

Ken: You’re teaching her to follow her heart.

Madigan: How? When I’m not following mine? All I’m doing is following your cock.

Ken: Fine, let’s get off the bus then.

Madigan: No.

Ken: (frowns) Maddie, you’ve got to decide what the fuck you want, coz I’m getting confused.

Madigan: (glares at him) Why don’t you decide what the fuck YOU want? Do you want me or my sister?

Ken: You know I want you.

Madigan: When are you going to leave her?

Ken: I can’t, you know that.

Madigan stares out the window.

Ken: What do you want to do? Right now, I mean. Do you want to go to the hotel?

Madigan: (sighs) I guess. I hear self-flagellation is good for the soul.
