47. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Tuesday, October 17th, 2:00pm
Madigan and Missy

Missy: Mommy, what’s a “seatful prick”?

Madigan: That’s DEceitful, and you don’t say the word “prick.” It’s not nice. What were you doing awake at eleven last night anyway?

Missy: I woke up when Shadow barked. Who were you talking to?

Madigan: Never you mind.

Missy: Was it Uncle Ken?

Madigan: (regards her daughter) What makes you think it was Uncle Ken?

Missy: Oh just ‘coz Auntie Barb called him that.

Madigan: And when did you hear that?

Missy: The day you went to work and I stayed at Auntie Barb’s place.

Madigan: Two weeks ago?

Missy: (shrugs) I guess.

Madigan: Did you hear anything else?

Missy: (nods) Uh-huh.

Madigan: What else did you hear?

Missy: Auntie Barb told him that he was no better than her sister. Isn’t you her sister, Mommy?

Madigan: Yes. (gazes out the window)

Missy: Are you “seatful,” Mommy?

Madigan: Not as much as Auntie Barb is.

Tuesday, October 10th, 3:00pm
Madigan and Barb

Barb: I caught him.

Madigan: Caught who doing what?

Barb: Ken. He’s definitely fooling around on me.

Madigan: (stares at her) What … makes you say that?

Barb: Lipstick. On his collar.

Madigan: No way!

Barb: Yep. Blood red. Who wears a colour like that anyway?

Madigan: (frowns) Not me.

Barb: Pfft. Some floosy. She’d have to be, to fool around with a married man. A real slut. One with no self-respect. Oh God, do you think she’s got a disease?

Madigan: I hope not!

Barb: Oh Maddie, what am I going to do? You know I hate confrontations. They’re so … belittling. Would you to talk to him?

Madigan: Me?!

Barb: You’re my sister. I trust you. Will you give him shit for me? Please?

Madigan: I’d love to give him shit. But shouldn’t you be the one to talk to him? You’re his wife after all. Anyway, I might slug him one.

Barb: You’re probably right. (sighs) Sometimes I envy you. Having none of this crap to worry about. Nobody fools around on you – you don’t have anybody.

Madigan: (snorts, turns to the window and mumbles) Not anymore.

37. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Saturday, October 7th, 9:00pm
Holly (and Edward)

Holly sits at the window, staring out. Edward takes the seat beside her.

Edward: Hi.

Holly starts crying.

Edward: Are you okay?

Holly: (sobbing) My boyfriend left me!

Edward: That bastard!

Holly: I know! And I’m pregnant! And my husband is going to kill me!

Edward: (raises an eyebrow dramatically) Your husband?

Holly: Yes! What am I going to do? My husband is going to know it’s not his!

Edward: I can take him out.

Holly: (wipes her eyes and takes her first good look at him) What do you mean, “take him out”? Who the hell are you?

Edward: I’m Edward. I mean take care of him. You know … (hisses, showing his plastic fangs)

Holly frowns and stares at him silently.

Edward: Is your husband home now?

Holly: (stares for a moment longer, considering) Actually there’s this guy named Joel…

Wednesday, October 4th, 3:00pm
Madigan and Ken

Madigan: Barb knows.

Ken: What do you mean?

Madigan: She knows there’s something going on. She doesn’t know it’s me though.

Ken stares down at his hands in his lap.

Madigan: What are you going to do about it?

Ken: Maybe we should cool it for a while.

Madigan: Probably a good idea.

Ken: But I don’t want to.

Madigan looks out the window

Ken: I’m thinking about leaving her.

Madigan: Don’t do it for me.

Ken: Why not? I want to be with you.

Madigan: (staring at him) It would destroy Barb and you know it.

Ken: Don’t you want to be with me?

Madigan: Not at the expense of my sister. This was never supposed to go beyond one time. I think we should just end it and cut our losses.

Ken: After today then?

Madigan: (looking out the window) This will be our last time.

Note: Strong language, adult themes.

Thursday, September 14th, 3:00pm
Madigan and Ken

Madigan: Do you really think we should be seen in public like this?

Ken: Why not? I’m your brother-in-law. We met on the street outside your work and now we’re going…

Madigan: Right. Where do we say we’re going again?

Ken: For a coffee.

Madigan: On a bus? Everyone knows there’s a Tim Horton’s within walking distance of anywhere downtown.

Ken: Don’t worry about it. We’re not going to be seen by anyone who knows us anyway.

Madigan sighs and looks out the window.

Ken: Do you want to go back?

Madigan: No.

Ken: You said yourself it’s not safe to get together at your place anymore. So what choice do we have?

Madigan: (mumbles) We could stop seeing each other.

Ken: (puts his hand on her knee) Did you say you want to stop seeing each other?

Madigan: I just don’t want to get caught. Barb is my sister … my only sister. And what am I teaching Missy?

Ken: You’re teaching her to follow her heart.

Madigan: How? When I’m not following mine? All I’m doing is following your cock.

Ken: Fine, let’s get off the bus then.

Madigan: No.

Ken: (frowns) Maddie, you’ve got to decide what the fuck you want, coz I’m getting confused.

Madigan: (glares at him) Why don’t you decide what the fuck YOU want? Do you want me or my sister?

Ken: You know I want you.

Madigan: When are you going to leave her?

Ken: I can’t, you know that.

Madigan stares out the window.

Ken: What do you want to do? Right now, I mean. Do you want to go to the hotel?

Madigan: (sighs) I guess. I hear self-flagellation is good for the soul.

10. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Sunday, September 10th, 9:00am
Madigan and Missy

Madigan: Sit still.

Missy: (speaks around thumb) I don’t wanna go to church.

Madigan: We have to. It’s a family obligation.

Missy: What’s a obagation?

Madigan: ObLIgation. It’s when Mommy should have shown up for your Auntie Barb’s Labour Day barbecue and didn’t, and now she feels bad. So we’re going to see her at church.

Missy: (looks out the window for a moment) Is that like when you feel bad for not shaving your legs when Uncle Ken comes for a sleepover?

Madigan: (laughs) Yeah, sort of. But Uncle Ken doesn’t sleep over. Uncle Ken is Auntie Barb’s husband.

Missy: But he goes in your room sometimes after I go to bed at night.

Madigan: (regards Missy for a moment) You know what? Why don’t we skip church and go to McDonald’s for breakfast instead.

Missy: Yay!

Thursday, September 7th, 5:00pm
Joel and Pete

Joel: So you know that Holly chick I’ve been talking about?

Pete: Oh, the married one?

Joel: Yeah.

Pete: You been seeing her a while. Couple of months – that’s gotta be a record for you.

Joel: Yeah, well she’s knocked up.

Pete: No shit! Is it yours?

Joel: I wish I knew for sure. Either way, I’m gone.

Pete frowns.

Joel: What? Her husband’s going to kill me if he figures it’s me, which he will if it’s mine because they’re both white and well, fuck, she’s just not fucking worth it. She’s going to be raising it alone one way or the other so what would you do?

Pete: I might know a guy.
