219. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Saturday, April 7th, 3:00pm
Karla (and Kevin)

Karla sits at the window. Kevin takes the seat beside her.

Kevin: Nice cell you got there.

Karla: (without looking up from her cell phone) Uh huh.

Kevin: I just got a new one myself. (digs phone out of his pocket)

Karla: (without looking up) That’s nice.

Kevin: Cost me two thousand bucks.

Karla: (glances at his phone) You got ripped off.

Kevin: No way. This thing is fast. Put it on a table and it turns the whole table into a screen.

Karla: (without looking up) Uh huh.

Kevin: Even a wooden table.

Karla: Riiiight.

Kevin: It’s true.

Karla: (looks at him) Put it down on that seat over there. I wanna see it turn into a screen.

Kevin: (shakes head) Won’t work. It’s not a table.

Karla scoffs at him and goes back to her phone.

Kevin: It can even predict the lottery numbers.

Karla: (without looking up) So you’ll be buying a car tomorrow?

Kevin: (smiles) Prolly.

Karla: Good, then you won’t be on the bus.

137. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Monday, January 15th, 5:00pm
Kevin (and Phil)

Kevin is seated in the aisle seat. Phil approaches.

Phil: Mind if I sit here?

Kevin: Not at all. (moves to the window seat)

Phil: (sits) Ugh. I hate the bus.

Kevin: Why you on it then?

Phil: My car broke down. Again.

Kevin: Oh yeah? I used to own a car.

Phil: Why’d you give it up?

Kevin: Ah, it was a Mercedes.

Phil stares at him, waiting for him to go on.

Kevin: Yeah, it was repossessed. Actually, a bunch of drug dealers took it. They thought I was someone else. Who owed them, y’know?

Phil: So … did you call the cops?

Kevin: Nah. I had enough money to buy another one.

Phil: That’s not the point.

Kevin: (snorts) You ever been in trouble with the mob?

Phil: No. I work in an office.

Kevin: Then you wouldn’t understand. They’d come after me? I’da been dead. Then what good would a Mercedes have done me?

Phil: True.

Kevin: So I just left town. Came here. (looks behind him) I don’t think they’re following me anymore.

Phil stares at him for a moment then moves to another seat.

Lacey and Kevin

Kevin: I’m real glad we live close.

Lacey: (sounding unenthusiastic) Yeah.

Kevin: And now that we work at the same place, we can take the bus together.

Lacey: Uh huh.

Kevin: I wasn’t surprised I got the job.

Lacey: Really.

Kevin: I won an award for selling the most shoes at the place I worked in, in Kingston.

Lacey: Uh huh.

Kevin: Kingston, Jamaica.

Lacey: You mentioned that yesterday.

Kevin: It was a lot different there. Spending time on the beach all day, playing volleyball …

Lacey: Uh huh.

Kevin: It was real nice there. And it never rained.

Lacey: Never?

Kevin: Well only at, like, 2am when no one was out sunbathing anyways.

Lacey: No shit.

Kevin: No shit. It was perfect.

Lacey: So why’d you move here?

Kevin: This guy gave me all this money and said if I wanted to keep it, I had to move to Canada.

Lacey stares at him.

Kevin: Seriously! I had to stash it in my house where no one would find it.

Lacey: Your house where you live with your mom.

Kevin: Yeah. I can’t exactly go around spendin’ it. People would wonder.

Lacey: Uh huh.
