344. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Friday, August 10th, 7:00pm
Drommen and Francine

Francine: What will you do now that Hillary’s moved out?

Drommen: (shrugs) I dunno.

Francine: You could date her. I know you like her.

Drommen: I suppose. Now that Phillipa’s gone. Only …

Francine: Only you’d have to give up your hobby.

Drommen stares at her.

Francine: You think I don’t know what you do on the bus?

Drommen: It’s not something I really want to discuss with my sister.

Francine: Nevertheless. You should think about it. She’s worth it.

Drommen: I’ll think about it.

Wednesday, May 9th, 5:00pm
Drommen and Francine

Drommen: Are you sure you’re going to be okay?

Francine: Jake, I’ll be fine. The doctor gave me the go-ahead.

Drommen: But isn’t it a little drastic, you moving out?

Francine: I’ll be okay.

Drommen snorts.

Francine: And besides, I’ve cramped your style enough already.

Drommen: Pfft. What style?

Francine: How about that girl you like? Hillary, or Jessica or whatever her name is?

Drommen: Jessica. She doesn’t want anything to do with me. Thinks I’m a pervert.

Francine: So convince her you’re not. I know you’re a decent guy.

Drommen: (regards her silently for a moment) You don’t know me as well as you think you do, sis.

Francine: Sure I do.

Thursday, March 15th, 5:00pm
Drommen and Francine (and Hillary)

Drommen: Let’s just get you home okay? You look like you’re about to collapse. I don’t know why they let you out so soon …

Francine: I’m okay.

Drommen: (puts his arm around her) No you’re n– (looks up to see Hillary board the bus) Oh God.

Hillary: (approaches) Jake! You’re out!

Drommen: (widening his eyes and shaking his head minutely) Jessica, hi. This is my sister, Francine.

Francine: (looks up and smiles thinly) Hi. Jake’s mentioned you. Nice to meet you.

Hillary: Hi. (turns to Drommen) So, how was–

Drommen: (cutting her off) Francine’s not feeling well. Can we talk another time?

Hillary: Sssure … I just wanted to say I’m glad you got out of j–

Drommen: FUCK! off now, please.

Hillary, looking as though she’s about to cry, walks to the back of the bus.

Francine: Why were you so rude? I thought you liked her.

Drommen: I do. Just … never mind. Let’s get you home, okay?

Thursday, January 4th, 3:00pm
Drommen and Francine

Francine: Why are you so pissed off at me?

Drommen: (stares at her silently for a moment) I’m picking you up from the hospital and you’re insisting on going back to that hovel you live in. That’s why. Did I not say I’d take care of you?

Francine: I don’t want to be a burden.

Drommen: People you love are never a burden.

Francine: Fine. I’ll move in with you. Is that what you want?

Drommen: Yes.

Francine: (takes his hand) I love you too.

Monday, December 4th, 5:00pm
Drommen and Francine

Drommen: You know you can just quit your job.

Francine: And what, have you look after me?

Drommen: Of course. You know I’ll do anything for you.

Francine: I can’t let you do that. I’ll just stay put.

Drommen: Well, at least promise me you’ll look for something else. I can tell you’re getting stressed out.

Francine: (sighs) You’re right. I look around.

Drommen takes her hand and pats it.

Francine: I don’t know what I’d do without you.
