336. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Thursday, August 2nd, 5:00pm
Drew (and Cletis)

Drew sits at the window. Cletis takes the seat beside him.

Drew: I think I’ve finally figured out why they call them “TV dinners.”

Cletis: Oh yeah?

Drew: Yes. The philosophy of having something so simple as to be able to cook it without any preparation ahead of time, allows one to watch television whilst awaiting a delicious meal with minimal effort.

Cletis: Huh. I thought it was ’cause when you stick ’em in the microwave you can watch them go around and around, just like you was watchin’ TV.

Drew: (thinks for a moment) It could be that too.

277. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Monday, June 4th, 4:00pm
Farmer Brown (and Drew)

Farmer Brown sits at the window. Drew takes the seat beside him.

Drew: Nice cowboy boots you got there.

Farmer Brown: Thanks. I got these when I got my horse. She died just yesterday.

Drew: No!

Farmer Brown: (shrugs) It happens.

Drew: That’s true. It’s a funny life we have here on this green earth. Here one day, gone the next. It’s fleeting, and yet we take it for granted. One day each and every one of us will be forgotten. Still, I’m sorry for your loss. So what will you do now?

Farmer Brown: Buy a new pair of boots.

266. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Thursday, May 24th, 4:00pm
Drew (and Sean)

Drew sits at the window. Sean takes the seat beside him.

Drew: Have you ever wondered at the delicacy of the connection we have with society on the world wide web?

Sean: No.

Drew: Think about it. We’ve become so reliant on this service, this technology. And yet it is what it is: a web. Strong and yet so precarious. We stomp along the spokes, hopping around what is essentially the world, and yet what if it should break?

Sean: Snail mail?

Drew: Indeed. You’re very smart, young man. Where do you get all that intellectual prowess from?

Sean: (shrugs) I saw a street address on the back of a cereal box once, for people who don’t have the internet.

Drew: Really?

Sean: Count Chocula, I think.

Drew: Fascinating.

260. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Friday, May 18th, 5:00pm
Miles (and Drew)

Miles sits at the window. Drew takes the seat beside him.

Drew: Nice afternoon after all that rain we had yesterday.

Miles: Uh huh.

Drew: Makes me think of the age-old question, why did the duck cross the road?

Miles: Shouldn’t that be a chicken?

Drew: It makes more sense that it should be a duck, don’t you think? A duck is a wild animal and more likely to be waiting at the side of a road, rather than a chicken, which would be penned up on a farm.

Miles: (stares at him for a moment) Do you have any toilet paper?

Drew: Hmm … (contemplates the question and nods slowly) I see what you’re saying.

258. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Wednesday, May 16th, 5:00pm
Drew (and Zoey)

Drew sits at the window. Zoey takes the seat beside him.

Drew: (points out the window) There is a bird in a tree.

Zoey: I’m sorry?

Drew: There is a bird in a tree … Or is the tree simply there for the bird?

Zoey: I think the bird …

Drew: (holds up a finger) You are going to say that because the bird moves and the tree does not, that the bird is the one who must be the subject, the one who provides the action, and the tree is merely awaiting the bird’s arrival. BUT! Does not the tree live longer?

Zoey: (nods slowly) It does …

Drew: So again, I ask, is the bird in the tree or does the tree exist for the bird?

Zoey: Errr … Both?

Drew: (frowns) I must contemplate this further.

Zoey: You’re welcome.
