The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS April 6/19

It’s Friday already! Where ever did the week go? Friday means it’s time for your Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt! During the month of April, I’ll use the appropriate letter of the day to correspond with the A to Z Challenge, to help out anyone who’s participating to do both challenges at the same time. Here’s your prompt:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “fab.” Use it as a word or find a word beginning with “fab.” As always, use any way you’d like. Have fun!

After you’ve written your Saturday post tomorrow, please link it here to this week’s prompt page and check to make sure it’s here in the comments so others can find it and see your awesome Stream of Consciousness post. Anyone can join in!

To make your post more visible, use our pretty SoCS badge! Just paste it in your Saturday post so people browsing the reader will immediately know your post is stream of consciousness and/or pin it as a widget to your site to show you’re a participant. Wear it with pride!!

SoCS badge by Pamela, at https://achronicalofhope.com/

Here are the rules:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing (typos can be fixed), and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. I will post the prompt here on my blog every Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The,’” or will simply be a single word to get you started.

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read all of them! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later or go to the previous week by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.

8. Have fun!

#SoCS – D’OH!

Oh yeah, I’m supposed to write a blog post today, aren’t I. D’oh!

It’s been a day. I managed to get out of the house for a while and not either go shopping for food, nor take Alex somewhere, nor pick Alex up from somewhere, nor do anything for someone else other than me. And it was nice. No internet, no kids, it was like a mini-vacation. For two hours.

You set the bar low, everything seems like a treat that’s not work.

Wow, was that sentence ever backwards.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do A-Z this year. Only one day left and I have no idea what to write about. Besides that, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo Camp to finish off the third book in my Dagmaru series, and I have a couple of editing jobs to do. And on the 24th I’m starting a course. SURE I’ll be able to fit in blogging every day. SURE! There we go–a self-flagellation theme.

Watch out in May for the Linda G. Hill line of cat ‘o nine tails, available in assorted colours. They’ll come with an instructional video, including bonus content on how to blog in your sleep.

That’ll bring in the dough.

#SoCS – Med Mail

The last piece of mail I received was from the people who provide medications to my mum’s retirement home. She doesn’t get her own mail anymore–it confuses her too much. They accidentally gave her her Visa bill last week and she’s been phoning me obsessing over it.

Anyway, this bill for meds comes to about $1.50 a month. Maybe less. I never know whether to pay it, because the bank charges more (I think) for processing fees than the bill is worth. It’s like the outstanding balance of $.79 I have on my credit card right now. Is it worth it? I dunno.

Alex and I went to see my mum today. As you might have guessed, she’s out of the hospital and back at the retirement home. At this point, though, she gets confused about where she is when she’s in her room. She’s having a hard time finding her way around the building, and everything worries her. She’s almost at the top of the waiting list for a nursing home–I think it’ll only be a couple of months–so when they get to her, she’ll be moving. Not the best situation, but what can you do? If she goes back to the bottom of the list, she won’t get one of the nicer places if it becomes a necessity.

Whatever I do, she’s not going to understand. She’s going to blame me for however she feels about it because I’m the only one she has. I’m responsible for whatever happens to her.

*sigh*

It’s much easier making decisions for your kids’ lives than it is your parents’.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “the last piece of mail you received.” Talk about the subject of the last piece of physical mail you received, i.e. a gas bill–talk about gas, not the bill itself. Have fun!

#SoCS – Heart and soul

Every day I do it.

Put my heart and soul into my work.

And still, I don’t feel like I do enough.

Because if it takes me an hour to write a good sentence,

or twenty minutes to edit one,

I haven’t the product–I haven’t been productive.

Writing is a skill

or I should say writing well is a skill–writing poetically is a skill

unlike building a wall of brick and mortar.

Because unlike the repetitive nature of building a wall,

no two sentences are quite alike.

No two stories are alike.

They each have their fingerprint,

the fingerprint of the author.

The soul of the author.

The experiences that make the author who he or she is.

So just because I don’t bang out a story in a few weeks,

doesn’t mean I’m not working.

Perhaps it just means my heart and soul

are unready to let it go.

#SoCS – Abashed

I’m abashed to realize that I am, again, late to my own bash.

Meaning my prompt.

‘Coz I ain’t gonna make it before midnight.

But I needed a break. Alex has finally gone to his dad’s for the weekend, for the second time this year, and I’ve spent most of the day either working or catching up on the things I needed to get done.

Did I get a break? I got a break from the pressure I usually have hanging over me … but to really take a break,

you’d have to bash me over the head and drag me away.

What I need is an honest to goodness vacation.

Somewhere I have no access to social media,

somewhere that the sky is blue, the beach is warm, the sea spread out before me with waves glittering under the sunlight,

somewhere I can close my eyes.

And drift away, without a care in the world.

Hell, I’d even take a dingy hotel room in the middle of a strange city at this rate.

Tokyo is strange.

Why did the angry chicken cross the road? To get away from KFC …?

#SoCS – Celebrate the little things

The thing about anniversaries is, if you think about them too much, you’ll realize how much time has passed and not only that, how old you’re getting. A milestone is just that–a marker to indicate how many miles you’ve gone. And a reminder of the toll they’ve taken on you.

But it’s not all necessarily bad. (Keep in mind I’m typing as I think, so this could easily go wonky on me.) With the miles come experience. Experience is golden in that if you let it, it provides an excellent teacher. On the other hand, if you let it, experience can provide you with bitterness. Because, let’s face it, not all experiences are positive, and not everyone can find the good in a negative experience. It could be said that some have no positives … unless you really REALLY dig deep.

My question is, if we celebrate a little every day the little things that happen, no matter how small or positive or even negative, does it make the bigger celebrations less like milestones? Yeah, probably not. (See my “wonky” disclaimer above.)

Little things I’m celebrating today?

I’ve been clumsy. I almost dropped Alex’s $750 feeding pump (but didn’t!), and somehow I managed to get butter in the dog biscuit box and dog biscuit crumbs on my toast. Honestly? Not as good as marmalade.

The positive in this? I get to tell you about it. And hopefully in the telling there won’t be a third thing. …who am I kidding? There’s always a third thing. But it likely won’t be falling down the stairs and throwing my laptop over my shoulder in the process (the last majorly clumsy thing I did), because I learned to pay attention to what I’m doing when I come down the stairs.

Something to celebrate!

Me and my buddy Winston, taken five minutes ago. I really need to go on a celery diet.
