One-Liner Wednesday – Badge Contest, 2019!

EDIT: Contest closed. Watch for the poll, to be posted here tomorrow morning (Monday, June 10), to vote for your favourite design. To get an early look at the contestants, go to the comment section below and click on the links.

Get out your art supplies, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s time for a new One-Liner Wednesday badge!

I’m a few weeks late this year (sorry, eh?), so I can’t promise the next badge will stay in circulation for a full 52 weeks, but it’ll be close! All you have to do is follow the guidelines below, and you can be entered into the contest!

Before we get started though, a moment of silence (and peace, and love) for the little friend who has graced our Wednesday pages for the past year and a bit.

#1linerWeds badge by Cheryl, at dreamingreality646941880.wordpress.com/

Thank you so much, Cheryl, for sharing your little friend with us. He’ll always have a special place in my heart. I hope you’ll enter the contest again this year!

This week’s One-Liner Wednesday will be the last one with Cheryl’s badge. Participate and enjoy it while you can!

Here are the guidelines for entry into the contest:

1. The design can be anything you want it to be, but it must include “One-Liner Wednesday” and your name and/or the name of your website.

2. Any pictures (art or photo) must be your own, and they must be family-friendly.

3. When you’re happy with your badge and you’re ready to share it, write a blog post on your own website and link back HERE in the comments, so voters can check it out. The deadline to do this is Sunday, June 9th, 11:59pm EST. All links included here by that time will be added to a poll.

4. All entries will be shared here on my blog on Monday, June 10th, 2019, along with the poll that will close the next day, Tuesday the 11th.

5. The winner’s badge will be available for anyone who participates in One-Liner Wednesday to post permanently on their website as a widget and/or to embed in their weekly One-Liner Wednesday post for the next year, give or take a couple of weeks.

6. One entry per person. The contest is open to anyone with an active blog, WordPress or otherwise (see #3 for entry requirements).

7, Poll results will not be available while the poll is open. If there is a tie, I will choose the winner myself.*

8. If I’ve missed anything, or if you have any questions, please ask in the comment section below.

9. Have fun!

*I retain the right to refuse any badge that is distasteful, regardless of the number of votes it receives.

One-Liner Wednesday – Reason #27 Why Sign Language is Our Friend

When you’re walking down the sidewalk with your son and a somewhat scary man singing repetitively at the top of his lungs approaches you from behind and passes you, you can continue your conversation and pretend you didn’t even hear him.

If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a pingback, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post, and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday you’re pinging back to is this week’s! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.

NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, like Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a pingback from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. It’s bound to be short and sweet.

Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”

The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

5. Have fun!

One-Liner Wednesday – Books

There’s nothing better and nothing worse than finding a really great book to get lost in. While you’re reading it, it’s pure escapism. When you finish it, it’s a mad scramble to find something as good. Problem is, really great books are rare.

One-Liner Wednesday – Can I borrow that?

When I see other authors thanking their significant others for helping out with the housework and looking after the kids, it crosses my mind to ask if I can borrow their partners so I can finish my book.

Then I realize that’s not a good way to make friends.

One-Liner Wednesday – Memories

I saw a woman on Saturday who I know, but only in context of where I usually see her, sitting behind a desk … where? Three days later, I still can’t place her, and it’s driving me nuts!!!

One-Liner Wednesday – “Take a break,” they said.

When I remembered I hadn’t scheduled my One-Liner Wednesday, I was watching the clock tick over from 1:19am to 1:20. I felt guilty for about five minutes, and I actually considered getting up and doing it, even though my alarm was set for three hours and forty minutes from then. Then it came to me … what everyone has been telling me: “Give yourself a break.” So I went to sleep.

Still, sorry I’m late.

One-Liner Wednesday – Pavlov’s Dog

Highest level achieved.

Every day, when it’s time for Alex to come home from school, my phone alarm goes off. Then I get up and tell the dog to go in his crate (so he doesn’t jump on Alex when he walks in the door) and I give him a biscuit for going in.

One day last week, my alarm went off and before I moved, Winston went into his crate and started drooling.

Pavlov would be proud.

One-Liner Wednesday – The Moon

Can you see the moon, way up in the sky on an almost-cloudless day? Can you see Alex?

(The moon is about 7 o’clock from the highest peak on the house.)

One-Liner Wednesday – Waiting

While it’s unfortunate that my mother, after being released from care in the emergency room, had to stay there until I could go and pick her up, I have to say, it was rather refreshing to have the ER doctors wait three hours to see me.

One-Liner Wednesday – Will Ferguson – you should read his books

“Many Canadian nationalists harbour the bizarre fear that should we ever reject royalty, we would instantly mutate into Americans, as though the Canadian sense of self is so frail and delicate a bud, that the only thing stopping it from being swallowed whole by the US is an English lady in a funny hat.”
― Will Ferguson

EDIT: As I should have at the start, I need to put the above quote into context. It was written (or said) years ago, long before the current US administration was even a glint in anyone’s eye. I can’t find a date for it, but I know this because I “liked” it on my Goodreads page in 2014.

It refers to the collective Canadian desire and ongoing struggle to figure out how we are different as a culture, rather than a strong will not to be Americans. It’s about what defines us as Canadians. And it was written with affection for our southern neighbours, who we love.

I apologize to anyone who took it in anything but the spirit in which it was intended.
