Her cabalistic habits sometimes got in the way of her household budget – she couldn’t go to the grocery store without buying half a dozen candles in different shapes and sizes.

If you hadn’t heard, Linda is flying away to a land far away this week so she asked for some help with theĀ SoCS prompt. I was excited to help, but then I remembered that Linda likes me to “introduce” myself and I don’t know; I just feel so awkward. It most likely won’t stop me in the future, but maybe it will remind me to plan better, although I’m not entirely sure how you plan one of these posts.
I guess I’ll just jump right in and go for it. If you were around last year, I’ll try not to bore you with a repeat of my first introduction post.
Not much has changed with me since last year except my day job. After six months of working a job I really hated, I finally found something that I love, but it restricts when I can actually jump on the blog and write. I’ve had to work writing and blogging into my nighttime and weekends and it hasn’t been as easy as it was a year ago, but I feel it’s totally worth the sacrifices. Every time I go a few days without posting, I feel like I’m missing something and I inevitably end up hearing from a family member to get my butt in gear.
Perhaps the change in my circumstance led to the change that has happened on my blog. I’ve done a lot more poetry this year, which hasn’t been a bad thing. I’m reminded how much I love poetry. I do miss the longer stories I used to write, but those take a lot more out of me and at this point, I can’t seem to find the time. I’m hoping I can fit them in once I’m more established at the new job.
I also started my very own prompt this summer called Song Lyric Sunday. I love music and wanted to share my favorite music with my blogging friends and have them share their favorites with me. It’s more like a simmer right now instead of the wildfire I hoped it would be, but I do love those who have participated with me. If you’re interested, you are more than welcome to jump in!
You can find me over at This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. As I’ve said, I write poetry, flash fiction and I try to write stream of conscious every Saturday, although I’ve missed a few weeks this year. I have three beautiful kids that I write about quite a lot and I’ve written a few posts about the struggle with the day job. I guess you could say I try to keep it real.
I’m excited to read all your posts on Saturday. I hope I can make Linda’s absence not seem so rough, although I know she will be missed.
Yes, I’ve posted every day this month so far. No, I haven’t linked every day to NanoPoblano. Coz you know what? It feels like the first thing that goes when I’m stressed is the enthusiasm for anything that’s not deathly necessary. And a lot of things right now are deathly necessary. On top of that, it seems the world is in turmoil and there’s nothing I can do about it. So I offer you a picture. I’ve been waiting for the right time to post it and this feels like it. It’s not a dove, but they are white birds.
May you have peace this evening, where ever you are.
This is a post I’ve been procrastinating on all day, because … there is nothing to describe. It is, of course, about the attacks on Paris. The attacks all over the world, but understandably it is Paris we relate to because if it can happen at a concert somewhere in the “civilized” Western world then it can happen in our own back yards. But that’s not where my mind is going. Where my mind is going is how do we stop it.
I’ve spent the day considering how a follower of Tao, as I am, would handle this and the only thing I can come up with is this: teach by example. We must teach our children tolerance. We must be tolerant. Human suffering goes on everywhere. Yes, some suffering is more … extensive? That’s not really the word I’m looking for. Prolonged. Yes, prolonged. But suffering is a human condition. And until we can teach our children that we are all equal, whether we are disabled, or have different languages, or colour of skin, the truth is we are all human and we all feel the same things… until we can teach our kids that THAT is what is important and not what we believe is out there in the cosmos, or what might have created us or guided another human being to write a book – until we can teach our children that what really matters is that whomever our neighbour is that they feel the same things we feel and dream of the same happiness we dream of, until THEN, there will be wars and intolerance and discontentedness and hurt and pain in the name of that which only matters within the confines of our own minds and our own homes.
All lives are precious. ALL of them. This is not indescribable. It does not defy description. It transcends it.
It’s Friday the thirteenth and it’s your lucky day. Why? Because I’m here with your prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday! This will be my last prompt for a few weeks since I’ll be in Japan, but don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. You’ll have two exciting guest posters to create your prompt for the next two weeks. They’ll be posting before Friday to say hi; make sure you give them a warm welcome! In the meantime, here’s this week’s prompt:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “indescribable.”Ā Use the actual word in your post or just base your post on something that defies description. My suggestion on this one; think about something that you’re passionate about and just start writing. Have fun!
After you’ve written your Saturday post tomorrow, please link it here at this week’s prompt page and check to make sure it’s here in the comments so others can find it and see your awesome Stream of Consciousness post. Anyone can join in!
To make your post more visible, use the SoCS badge! Just paste it in your Saturday post so people browsing the reader will immediately know your post is stream of consciousness and/or pin it as a widget to your site to show you’re a participant. Wear it with pride!!
Here are the rules:
1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what youāre going to write.
2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence ā one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry ā it doesnāt matter. Just let the words carry you along until youāre ready to stop.
3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say āWrite about dogsā; the prompt will be more like, āMake your first sentence a question,ā āBegin with the word āTheā,” or simply a single word to get your started.
4. Ping back! Itās important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.Ā Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top.
5. Read at least one other personās blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If youāre the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, āStream of Consciousness Saturday,ā which youāll find right below the āLikeā button on my post.
6. Copy and paste the rules (if youād like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers youāll meet and the bigger your community will get!
7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.
Went into Starbucks last night – no one asked the cashier to write “Merry Christmas” on their cup instead of their name. I’m wondering if I can go back and say my name is “Snowflake” without cracking a smile.
Anyone who would like to try it out, feel free to use the āOne-Liner Wednesdayā title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a ping back, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday youāre pinging back to is this weekās! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.
As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a ping back from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. Itās bound to be short and sweet.
Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so thereās no need to stick to the same ātheme.ā
The rules that Iāve made for myself (but donāt always follow) for āOne-Liner Wednesdayā are:
I discovered a fantastic new prompt from Deborah of Container Chronicles, and it fit in so well with my NanoPoblano post for today, I thought I’d combine the two. I’ll leave the links for both at the end of this post – don’t forget to click on them.
So I’m thinking about what I should do about NanoPoblano when I’m on holiday. I haven’t scheduled any posts at all so far (which is what I figured would happen) and I’m thinking that even if I do, am I going to be able to reply to the comments? Probably not.
To do it or not to do it? Perhaps I’ll just schedule a post for the three days I’ll actually be traveling and leave the ones in between to chance. I know from experience that I’ll have equally good internet access there as I do here, and I don’t go out very much at night, so I’ll be sitting in my hotel rooms on the computer anyway. BUT, I could be doing something productive with that time, like reading, writing, or editing… Perhaps I’ll play it by ear.
If I ease myself away from the temptation to eat Hallowe’en candy, I can usually resist. If I banish the idea of eating it completely, the temptation becomes greater. Strange…
