Friday, July 27th, 8:00pm
MoJo and JoJo

JoJo: Dude. What do you say to a double date tomorrow night, man?

MoJo: I dunno man. Things are so weird lately! I think it must be the full moon or somethin’.

JoJo: It’s a blood moon.

MoJo: You serious?

JoJo: Yeah. And it’s in Aquarius, too, man.

MoJo: You’re a lunatic, Dude.

JoJo: No really! It’s gonna change lives and everything! (realization dawns) Oh, I see what you did there. (chuckles) Is that something like a FAN-atic?

MoJo: Oh Dude. With all this heat we’re getting, I’m definitely one of those.

JoJo: Me too, Dude. Me too.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS July 28/18

It’s Friday! And time for your Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. So hard to believe summer is half over already, isn’t it? Here’s your prompt:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “T, tea, tee.” Theme your post around “tea” or “tee,” or find a word that starts with “T” and talk about that. Bonus points if you manage to incorporate all three. Enjoy!

After you’ve written your Saturday post tomorrow, please link it here to this week’s prompt page and check to make sure it’s here in the comments so others can find it and see your awesome Stream of Consciousness post. Anyone can join in!

To make your post more visible, use our SoCS badge! Just paste it in your Saturday post so people browsing the reader will immediately know your post is stream of consciousness and/or pin it as a widget to your site to show you’re a participant. Wear it with pride!!

Here are the rules:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing (typos can be fixed), and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. I will post the prompt here on my blog every Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The,’” or will simply be a single word to get you started.

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read all of them! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later or go to the previous week by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.

8. Have fun!

329. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Thursday, July 26th, 6:00pm
Jewel and Finola

Jewel: I saw this couple on the bus earlier?

Finola: Uh huh?

Jewel: And they were, like, making out?

Finola: Uh huh?

Jewel: And they’re, like, “I love you.” “No, I love you more.” “No, I love you more.”

Finola: Ugh. Doesn’t that make you, like, sick?

Jewel: So totally. (sighs) I seriously need to get laid or something.

Finola: Tell me about it.

Jewel: Hey, do you get a creepy weird-assed feeling sitting here?

Finola: Like someone, like, died here or something?

Jewel: Yeah. Let’s change seats.

So, about those prompts …

Do you remember a couple of months back I created a poll to see when the best time to do another month’s-worth of prompts might be? And it was decided August would be a good month? Well guess what?

I have the prompts all lined up and ready to go, and I know just how I’m going to organize it, but …

I really don’t think I’m going to have the time nor the energy to pull it off. My new book comes out on the 10th, and about a week after that we’ll be looking for a new SoCS badge. And all that on top of having the child home for three out of four and a half weeks.

So, how does October sound to you instead? Good?

Did you even remember that I was going to post prompts every day in August?

If not, just ignore this post. And you might get a surprise come October 1st. 😉

Wednesday, July 25th, 6:00pm
Milo and Rebecca

Milo sits at the window. Rebecca takes the seat beside him.

Milo: (smiling pleasantly throughout) How are you today?

Rebecca: Fine thanks. How are you?

Milo: Oh I’m having a heart attack.

Rebecca: (shocked) Right now?

Milo: Yes. I’m on my way to the hospital.

Rebecca: Oh my God! Are you okay?

Milo: (shakes head, still smiling) No. Not at all.

Rebecca: (panicking) Your lips are blue! You need an ambulance!

Milo: The bus will do.

Rebecca: But you’ve still got to walk to emergency! You’ll never make it!

Milo: Yes I will. (slumps forward in seat, dead)

One-Liner Wednesday – Thank you

More than one line this week.

Dear You,

Thank you for supporting me. For reading my fiction and my ramblings. And for giving me encouragement when I need it most.

Thank you. Yes, you. The one reading this note.

With love & magic

Linda

If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a pingback, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post, and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday you’re pinging back to is this week’s! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.

NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, like Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a pingback from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. It’s bound to be short and sweet.

Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”

The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely new badge to your post for extra exposure!

5. Have fun!

Three Times Lucky

This post has been brewing for about a week.  Since I can’t sleep tonight, here it is.

It was Tuesday. I know it was Tuesday because I took Alex to his weekly baseball game at 7pm. But it all started on the way to camp in the morning.

I was driving along the main strip during what passes for rush hour in this little city, late as usual. It’s a four-lane road, with two lanes going north and two going south, with lots of plazas, restaurants, car dealerships–you get the picture–on both sides. Anyhoo, I was traveling north in the left lane when I came to a line of cars stopped, waiting for someone to turn left. I was still going the speed limit, so I decided to go around them. I checked my rear-view mirror: absolutely nothing behind me. Checked my blind spot: nothing there either. So I put my blinker on to change lanes.  Just as someone pulled out of a driveway on my right.

Here’s a diagram: (I’m the one driving the purple space ship.)

Mad Paint Skillz Diagram 1

I managed to swerve and miss him, though I’m guessing he really slammed on the brakes. Close call number one.

Fast forward to the afternoon. I’d picked Alex up from camp and we were coming home.

There’s this one little awkward four-way intersection near my house with a two-way stop. I had to stop. I did. I looked both ways. I swear I did. I always look left first, then right, then left one more time because that’s where the nearest cars are coming from. Where the one I almost pulled out in front of that was coming down the street on the passenger side of my car, I have no clue. In my defense, it really is an awkward intersection. It’s hard to see both ways, AND I have this post on the side of my windshield that gets in the way.

Mad Paint Skillz Diagram 2

We both slammed on the brakes this time. And avoided a collision. Still, that was close call number two.

I KNEW there was going to have to be a number three. I just KNEW it. But, I got in the car anyway to drive Alex to baseball. I could have let my best friend, John, drive–he was coming with us anyway, and he’s a professional driver–but I didn’t.

How far from home did we get? About two minutes. Almost the same scenario as the morning, the difference being I was in the right lane this time, and the cars were stopped for a light.

I saw way ahead that there was construction in the right lane, so I decided to go around the loooong line of cars in the right lane. I checked VERY carefully – rear-view, blind spot, rear-view … Before I got a chance to change lanes, I saw a black SUV coming up fast behind me. He pulled the same maneuver I did in the morning–without slowing, he went around me and all the cars in front of me.

I said out loud to John, “Oh well, I guess I’m not changing lanes yet,” and at the same time, John said, “Oh shit.”

What happened ahead of me when I was concentrating on my lane change was this:

  1. The light had gone green.
  2. The black SUV saw this and didn’t slow down.
  3. A car in the long line of cars in the right lane stopped to let someone pull out of the Dairy Queen driveway on the right.
  4. Bang.

Mad Paint Skillz Diagram 3

If that black SUV hadn’t cut me off, I’d have hit the twit who trusted the other twit to let him out of the DQ. John saw it coming before I did, though I might have seen it too because I’d have had my focus front-ways, but would I have seen it in time? I doubt it.

I also doubt the guy who got T-boned enjoyed his ice cream very much.

Close call number three was three times extremely lucky.

326. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Monday, July 23rd, 6:00pm
Curtis and Melody

Curtis: So, do you watch Game of Thrones?

Melody: I don’t watch TV.

Curtis: Huh. What kind of music do you listen to?

Melody: I like the bagpipes.

Curtis: Interesting … Watched any good movies lately?

Melody: Yeah, actually. I just saw Ishtar for the first time. I thought it was great.

Curtis: Ishtar?

Melody: Yeah, you know. Dustin Hoffman?

Curtis: Oh right. Riight …

Melody nods, her hands resting on her lap.

Curtis: So I thought we’d, you know, go bowling or something tonight.

Melody: Oh. I don’t have bowling shoes.

Curtis: (smiles) You can rent them.

Melody: (shakes head) I don’t think so. I take a size fifteen.

Curtis: Huh. So what would you like to do?

Melody: We could … I dunno, maybe take in a hockey game?

Curtis: Sure!

Melody: My baby brother is playing. He’s four. My parents and all my aunts and uncles will be there.

Curtis:  (eyes wide) Damn!

Melody: What is it?

Curtis: I just remembered I have to take my dog for a walk. I’d better get off here. (stands) Maybe we can try for a date again next week. I’ll call you.

Curtis gets off the bus.
