Captain Longsight (and Zoey)

Captain Longsight sits at the window. Zoey takes the seat beside him.

Captain Longsight: (pulls binoculars from bag and peers through them out the window) Holy Shamoly!

Zoey: What?

Captain Longsight: There’s a crime going on down that sidestreet!

Zoey: (holds hand out for the binoculars) Can I see?

Captain Longsight: There’s no way you can see it.

Zoey: Why not? The bus isn’t going anywhere.

Captain Longsight: It’s not that. It’s just I have amazing powers of being able to see long distances.

Zoey: (laughs) Of course you can. You have binoculars.

Captain Longsight: Oh these? (holds up binoculars) These don’t matter. I’m Captain Longsight. I was born with extraordinary powers of farsightedness.

Zoey: Soo … why do you carry binoculars?

Captain Longsight: Well … You wouldn’t understand.

Zoey: Try me.

Captain Longsight: They were a gift.

Zoey: Kinda like your gift of farsightedness?

Captain Longsight: N0! Like a birthday gift.

Zoey: Huh. So, Captain Longsight, do you fight crime with your superpowers?

Captain Longsight: (pulls cell phone out of pocket and smiles) I call the cops!

Zoey: Hooray. (changes seats)

Agatha: I’m going to my granddaughter’s house for dinner. (gestures to a dish on her lap) I’m bringing the bread pudding.

Michael: (mumbles without looking up) That’s nice.

Agatha: My great-granddaughter Kitty will be there. Such a precious thing she is, though the clothes she wears! I don’t know what children are thinking these days. What’s that thing you’re holding?

Michael: This? It’s an iPad.

Agatha: (sighs) All these newfangled gadgets. Why, in my day we used to read things like newspapers and books. We wore things that covered us up and we baked our own bread pudding!

Michael shrugs and stares at his iPad.

Agatha: (after a few minutes) I’m going to my granddaughter’s house for dinner.

Michael: (rolls eyes) And I bet you’re taking bread pudding.

Agatha: How did you know?

Michael: Lucky guess.

Joanna: What’s going on?

Michael: (sighs) Apparently some guy went into all the discos in town last night and broke the mirror balls.

Joanna: I didn’t know there were any discos in town.

Michael: Neither did I. (he turns to her) Hey, do you read the paper?

Joanna: Sometimes, why?

Michael: (smiles) I’ve been waiting for someone to come along who’d just sit and, you know, read.

Joanna: (grins) I can read.

Bella: I haven’t seen him either, thank God. There are some real weirdos in this town.

Drommen: I suppose there are.

Bella: So, you take the bus a lot?

Drommen: Every day.

Bella: Would you like to go for a coffee sometime? My treat.

Drommen: Thank you, but I’m afraid you might find out I’m another one of those weirdos in town.

Bella frowns, confused.

Drommen: But when you’re a little older, I’d be pleased to have you join me for a bus ride. (smiles) My treat.

Donald: Hi.

Zoey: (looks at him suspiciously) Hiii?

Donald: Nice night out.

Zoey: You’re not going to ask me if you can play with yourself, are you?

Donald: (laughs) No. I’m on my way to a psychiatrist appointment.

Zoey turns to the window.

Donald: (leans toward her and whispers) I think I might be gay.

Zoey: And you need a psychiatrist for that?

Donald: I don’t want to be (whispers) gay.

Zoey: I don’t think you have much of a choice. You are or you aren’t. Or you’re bi.

Donald: (raises his eyebrows) Bi? You mean that’s really a thing? I thought it was a myth.

Zoey rolls her eyes and stares out the window.

Donald: You know, come to think of it, you kind of turn me on.

Tuesday, September 19th, 5:00pm
Jeff (and Candice)

Jeff sits beside the window alone.

Candice: (taking the seat beside him) Hey, aren’t you Sandi’s boyfriend?

Jeff opens his mouth but says nothing.

Candice: You’re Jeff, right?

Jeff: Yes …

Candice: Sandi told me all about you. I work with her.

Jeff: At the …

Candice: Dungeon, yeah. She says you’re going to save her.

Jeff tugs at his clerical collar.

Candice: It looks like all you want to do right now is save yourself from this conversation.

Jeff: (laughs) You’re very astute. What exactly did Sandi tell you about me?

Candice: She told me you spent a ‘heavenly’ weekend together.

Jeff: That we did.

Candice: So are you going to make an honest woman out of her?

Jeff: I’d like to. But I know she enjoys her job very much.

Candice: And I’m guessing you do too.

Jeff nods.

Candice: Have you ever thought about checking out where we work? I mean, for yourself … not to save everyone there.

Jeff: I couldn’t …

Candice: There are plenty of things that I would think you ‘couldn’t’ do.

Jeff looks down at his hands and smiles.

Candice: (bumps his shoulder with hers) Struck a nerve?

Jeff: (laughs wryly) I suppose I owe it to Miss Fantasia to see where she spends her days. She’s familiar with my workplace, after all.

Candice: I’m sure she’d be thrilled.

Jeff: (looks her in the eye) Thank you.

Candice: For what?

Jeff: For helping me see the light.

Candice: (slaps his knee) You’re a funny guy.

Note: Strong language, adult themes.

Wednesday, September 13th, 7:00pm
Drommen (and Andrea)

Drommen sits at the window. Andrea sits down beside him.

Drommen: (smiles) Hello.

Andrea: Well hi! See this is, like, what the world needs. More friendly people.

Drommen: Mind if…

Andrea: It’s like I was telling my friend, Lacey? I said if there were more guys in this world who would, like, just be themselves and stop jerking around, don’t you think everyone could be, like, happier?

Drommen: Speaking of jerking around….

Andrea: I know, right? It’s like this guy I met online the other day. He’s, like, all nice and everything and we’re talking away and he seems like this really nice guy, you know? And the next thing I know he’s asking me if I want to get on the webcam, right?

Drommen: (slips his hand in his coat below the waist and nods) Ok.

Andrea: So I turn on my cam and he turns on his and he’s EXACTLY like he described himself! Which is great! Coz, you know how people are these days always misrepresenting themselves and shit, right?

Drommen smiles and nods, his hand moving slowly up and down.

Andrea: So we’re talking and he’s smiling and everything’s, like, going great and then this GUY, asks me if I want to see his THING! Can you believe it?

Drommen nods, leering.

Andrea: So I’m, like, dude! That is so cool! NOT! I mean, why would I want to see THAT? That’s fucking so disGUSTING! So then he’s, like, all apologetic and shit and I’m, like, dude, whatEV! (looks at Drommen for the first time) So what’s your deal?

Drommen: Oh, just enjoying the ride. Hey, would you mind if I get off?

Andrea: Of course not.

Andrea gets out of her seat, but Drommen doesn’t move.

Drommen: (stares up at her for a moment, then removes his hand from his coat) Never mind.
