135. Scenes from the Second Seat on the Right

Saturday, January 13th, 8:00pm
Drommen (and Andrea)

Drommen sits at the window. Andrea takes the seat beside him.

Drommen: Good evening.

Andrea: Hey, I know you. We, like, sat together before. How you been doing?

Drommen: Not bad thanks, and you?

Andrea: (sighs) I’m so in love.

Drommen: Good for you!

Andrea: Not really. I, like, met him at New Year’s? And I haven’t seen him since. I was hoping I’d find him on the bus. That’s where I met him the first time. You meet some, like, really interesting people on the bus.

Drommen: That’s true.

Andrea: Anyways, I don’t suppose you’ve seen him? He’s pretty tall, skinny, and, like, drop-dead gorgeous, and he has really sharp fangs.

Drommen: Were you drunk on New Year’s Eve by any chance?

Andrea: Seriously? How’d you know?

Brandon and Jordan

Brandon: Did Marissa accept your proposal?

Jordan: She wants to wait. See whether or not I get the scholarship. Obviously I didn’t tell her I already got it.

Brandon: Told ya.

Jordan: I don’t know what to fuckin’ do. On one hand I have this opportunity, and on the other …

Brandon: Wouldn’t she go with you?

Jordan: She wants to go to school up here.

Brandon: You could have a long distance relationship.

Jordan: That’s what I said. She still wants to wait.

Brandon: Sorry man.

Jordan: She also wants …

Brandon: What?

Jordan: To sleep together.

Brandon: Right on.

Jordan: But I said no.

Brandon: (stares) You said what? Are you crazy?

Jordan: No. I want to wait until we’re married.

Brandon: (after a moment of stunned silence) Might be a deal breaker man.

Jordan: Yeah, well. Too bad.

Brandon: (snorts) Good luck.

Wednesday, January 10th, 8:00pm
Justin and Mr. Splindle

Mr Splindle: So what’s the damage?

Justin: I beg your pardon?

Mr. Splindle: How much did you get out of the old lady last night?

Justin: A couple thou.

Mr. Splindle: That’s my boy! You’re gonna go far.

Justin: I’m not so sure about this deal …

Mr. Splindle: No! You’ve done good! All you need is a little confidence in yourself. Tell you what. We’ll head out to the peeler bars tonight, get you good and happy, and then tomorrow you can start off fresh. What do you say?

Justin stares quietly.

Mr. Splindle: There’s a lot of money in it for you, son.

Justin: But … It’s dishonest.

Mr. Splindle: (regarding him with a frown) Think of it this way. What you did last night was no more dishonest than what that woman is doing to our poor government. She’s no more disabled than you or I.

Justin: But she did seem a little …

Mr. Splindle: A little what? Gimpy? All an act! (laughs) You’ve got to learn when someone’s having you on, my boy. But I’ll teach you. Yes, my son, you’ve got a lot to learn.

Justin: Mr. Splindle?

Mr. Splindle: Yes lad?

Justin: I’m not your son.

Mr. Splindle: (chuckles) It’s an affectation, my boy. Besides, at the rate you’re going it’s only a matter of time before we’re just like family. Don’t you think? Now let’s go get ourselves some ass!

Fiona (and Justin)

Fiona sits by the window. Justin takes the seat beside her.

Justin: Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere?

Fiona: You talkin’ to me?

Justin: Yeah. I’ve seen you somewhere before.

Fiona: No kiddin’.

Justin: Don’t you work at the mall or something?

Fiona: Who me? Nah. I’ve been on disability for two years. Had a car accident.

Justin: That’s terrible. Do you want to go for a coffee?

Fiona: (pauses for a moment) Are you joking? I’m old enough to be your mother.

Justin: Yeah, and?

Fiona: Okay then. But I’ve gotta warn ya, I think I’m comin’ down with a cold. That scares some people off.

Justin: I don’t mind.

Fiona: (smiles) Brave lad.

Donald and Spencer

Spencer: Why don’t you just move out?

Donald: Robert needs me. I can’t just abandon him now.

Spencer: (takes Donald’s hand) I think he’ll understand.

Donald: I only wish. But he’s been so pathetic lately. He even brought this guy home to make me believe he wasn’t still in love with me.

Spencer: There’s a lot to love.

Donald: I’ll break the news soon. Promise.

Spencer: And then?

Donald: And then we can live happily ever after, of course.

Christine: Yeah, honey?

Teddy: Why is it so cold out?

Christine: ‘Coz it’s winter.

Teddy: Why is it winter?

Christine: ‘Coz that’s just what time of year it is.

Teddy: Don’t bears go to sleep in the winter?

Christine: Yes they do.

Teddy: Why don’t we go to sleep in the winter?

Christine: Because we don’t need to.

Teddy: Do bears need to?

Christine: Yes.

Teddy: Do you need to?

Christine: Only at night.

Teddy: Why do you have to sleep at night?

Christine: Same reason you do.

Teddy: But sometimes I don’t sleep at night.

Christine: I’m painfully aware of that.

Teddy: Does it hurt?

Christine: Not really.

Teddy: Then why do you keep telling me to go to sleep?

Christine: Because you need sleep.

Teddy: Is that why you called me Teddy?

Christine: (regards him) Yes.

Drommen: (glances at her) Hi.

Bella: Where have you been?

Drommen: Around.

Bella: Well you’ve missed a lot. Edward is still after me and now his new girlfriend wants to scratch my eyes out.

Drommen: Hmm.

Bella: Do you think you can help out?

Drommen: I don’t know what I can … (looks up the aisle) Oh God.

Hillary: (approaches and sits behind Drommen and Bella) Hey, there you are!

Drommen: (unenthusiastically) Here I am.

Hillary: You should know that flasher guy just won’t give up. I keep hearing about him.

Drommen: That’s too bad.

Hillary: Aren’t you going to do anything about it? I thought you considered this “your bus.”

Drommen: Let the cops look after it. They’re around.

Bella: What’s gotten into you?

Hillary: (frowning) Yeah. Are you okay?

Drommen: I’ve got personal stuff going on.

Bella and Hillary stare at him.

Drommen: I’ll see what I can do.

Bella: Thanks Drommen.

Drommen turns to look at Hillary. Hillary smiles at him.

Percy: Because I think someone is following me.

Zoey: Uh huh.

Percy: When I go to the store, when I go out for dinner … if I go to the zoo … doesn’t matter.

Zoey: So why don’t you just stay home?

Percy: I’m trying to lose them.

Zoey: (stares open-mouthed for a few seconds, then shakes head) Excuse me.

Francine: Why are you so pissed off at me?

Drommen: (stares at her silently for a moment) I’m picking you up from the hospital and you’re insisting on going back to that hovel you live in. That’s why. Did I not say I’d take care of you?

Francine: I don’t want to be a burden.

Drommen: People you love are never a burden.

Francine: Fine. I’ll move in with you. Is that what you want?
