Posts, of the blogging kind, can be very difficult to come up with. What do you talk about that hasn’t already been talked about? It’s really why I came up with this prompt (SoCS) in the first place. Because I wanted to be able to write … whatever. And the best way I’ve found to do that is to write by the seat of my pants, whatever comes to mind.
But there are times when I have just way too much going on in my head. I need to be relaxed when I write, not have a storm of accumulating cotton balls floating around between my ears. That’s really what it feels like. They accumulate and then they clog the path to output until I’m ready to explode. Yet nothing that comes out makes any sense. Can you tell I’m kinda there already? Haha.
Distractions don’t help either.
Nor do the little gems I want to publish that I want even more to save for something like One-Liner Wednesday (I have two lined up already), or to keep for a post when I have time to sit down and really do a good job on it. As opposed to what I’m doing here.
Hey! They put tartar sauce on my Filet-O-Fish tonight!
See what I mean?
I think it’s a matter of practice, too. (Not putting tartar sauce on a sandwich–I’m back to talking about posts again. Keep up! Hahahaha. Yeah, good luck with that.) When I post a lot, say during a prompt month like January (Just Jot It) and April (A-Z), I have no problems coming up with something to write. Blogging depends on momentum. Or at least the ease of it does. In my experience at least.
Drommen sits at the window. Phillipa takes the seat beside him.
Drommen: It’s you again!
Phillipa: Well look at that; so it is.
Drommen: I think I’m ready this time.
Phillipa: To masturbate for me? Isn’t that lovely.
Drommen opens his trenchcoat.
Phillipa:(pulls an apple out of her bag and takes a big juicy bite) You know, I’ve never done this before. (wipes juice off her chin) Is it going to be messy?
Drommen: (watching her) Errr …
Phillipa: Because I have tissues in here somewhere. (digs in her purse and pulls out a pair of panties) Can you hold this for me?
Drommen takes them.
Phillipa: I had to take those off earlier today. I’m going commando right now.
Drommen: Uh huh.
Phillipa: They were just so wet … I get very excited, just spontaneously. You might not be the only one who needs a tissue here.
Drommen: Uh huh.
Phillipa: Oh here they are. (pulls out a package of tissues and holds her hand out) Can I have those back now.
Drommen: Sure.
Phillipa: Okie dokie. Whip it out, and let’s get started.
Hey there! It’s Friday, which means it’s time for your Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. I’ve been really itching to write something new lately. That’s a good thing because I have a couple of stories to submit for upcoming anthologies. No idea what to do yet, though. Maybe I’ll get inspired by this weekend’s prompt. Here it is:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “start with a noun.” Start your post with a noun, and write about whatever it is. Have fun!
After you’ve written your Saturday post tomorrow, please link it here at this week’s prompt page and check to make sure it’s here in the comments so others can find it and see your awesome Stream of Consciousness post. Anyone can join in!
To make your post more visible, use our new SoCS badge! Just paste it in your Saturday post so people browsing the reader will immediately know your post is stream of consciousness and/or pin it as a widget to your site to show you’re a participant. Wear it with pride!!
1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.
2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.
3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The’,” or simply a single word to get your started.
4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours. Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.
5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.
6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!
7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.
T.J.: Not really. I don’t think any kid should be subjected to that many mosquitoes.
Meghan: But it’s not all about the mosquitoes.
T.J.: Not to mention the spiders, snakes, raccoons, bears …
Meghan: You never went camping as a kid, did you?
T.J.: How can you tell?
Meghan: ‘Coz there’s so much more to it than that.
T.J.: Like what?
Meghan: Sleeping in a tent, canoeing, the campfire …
T.J.: Finding out there’s a rock in the middle of the tent when you’re trying to get to sleep, getting caught in a sudden storm in the middle of the lake, melting the toes of your sneakers because you’re freezing to death … I have friends who went.
